Technology and continued product research and development is leading to new and improved mattress choices for consumers but the breadth of mattress options can be overwhelming. There are many variations of mattress components and these components are constantly being improved and updated. So, to help alleviate some of the confusion of the mattress shopping experience, we have put together a list of 5 mattress terms that you should know before buying a mattress.
The adjustable base is fast becoming a standard part of buying a new mattress. Adjustable bases take the place of the box spring or foundation and allow the head and feet of the bed to be elevated. Elevating your head while in bed can make it easier to breathe and can relieve tension in the lower back. Elevating your feet while in bed can improve circulation and helps relieve tension in the lower back as well. Whether you’re watching TV, reading a book or perusing the web on your laptop or tablet, elevating your head and feet with the Adjustable Base provides plenty of comfort and convenience.
There are two types of hybrid mattresses. The izone mattress is a hybrid mattress featuring a combination of air, water and memory foam. The izone mattress is adjustable in seven zones from head to toe for targeted support and outstanding pressure relief. The Serta iComfort Hybrid mattresses feature an innerspring or coil unit with gel memory foam on top, which is quilted into either a firm top, plush top or pillow top. This hybrid mattress is the traditional style mattress with updated coil units and gel memory foam quilted into the top cover of the mattress.
Gel Memory Foam
Gel memory foam is made by combining the phase change gel material into visco elastic memory foam, which helps to keep the memory foam from trapping heat and becoming warm. The gel can be either infused or swirled into memory foam to create gel memory foam. Infused Gel Memory Foam performs better but is often more expensive than gel swirl memory foam. Proper Spinal Alignment Proper Spinal Alignment occurs when the mattress offers the proper support. Too little support allows the body to sink too far into the mattress. Too much support reduces the effectiveness of the mattress by not allowing the spine to conform to its natural position. Proper spinal alignment is very important to achieving the highest quality sleep. Take our Sleep Metrics diagnostic test to identify the proper support level for you.
Natural Latex Foam
Natural latex foam is a fast response, breathable foam, which offers incredible pressure relief and a cool sleeping experience. Natural latex foam is very durable, supportive and comfortable, offering a stark contrast to the dense, firm feel of memory foam. Natural latex foam is made from the milk from a rubber true through one of two processes: Talalay or Dunlop. Learn more about our Thomasville Natural Latex Foam mattresses.
